One of the challenges of using timber cladding externally is that it can at times weather quite badly, particularly in urban environments. Shou Sugi Ban is a technique of charring timber to weatherproof it, also giving it a rich charcoal black colour.

Top tip, if you plan to use Shou Sugi Ban it’s better to use slightly aged timber as it chars more homogeneously.
