Construction stages
Exhibited at the Secret Garden Party festival in 2016, The concept behind 'Bastion' is based around music fostering artistic expression, and what this artistic outlet represents for us in so many aspects of our lives. The pavilion both brings people together and celebrates their individuality in an elevated and peaceful space. The circular seating is about contemplation and inclusion, people inhabiting the space interact with the people around them, where the porous facade maintains a visual and sensory connection with the festival.
Bastion definition
An institution, place, or person strongly maintaining particular principles, attitudes, or activities.
A projecting part of a fortification built at an angle to the line of a wall, so as to allow defence in several directions.
Music : bastion of expression.
Artistic expression is raw emotion - simultaneously encouraging self exploration, shared experience, individualism and togetherness. Bastion is a representation of artistic expression. Here, it is not the instrument, but the vessel.
The Experience
Users climb into the space from beneath. In the peaceful solitude you can contemplate self. Circular seating encourages observation and understanding of those around you. Light penetrates the envelope creating a living, functional pavilion with a dynamic presence - inwards in daylight, outwards at nightfall.
