Sophia Road

The Sophia Road project, located in Waltham Forest, consists of a dormer and ground floor extension with a complete interior remodeling. The brief proposed by the client was to maximise the internal space and to make the narrow plan as efficient as possible.

The proposal positions the kitchen and dining space to the rear of the house within the new extension. This created a break-out space in the center of the plan and increased the size of the living room. Once located on the ground floor the master bathroom has been repositioned on the 1st floor. The dormer extension maximises the available space, providing space for a master bedroom, a bathroom, and a guest room/office.

The client also made it clear from the outset that they didn’t want a typical dormer extension as they felt they often detracted from the existing house and looked unsightly. The proposal sought to address this by using natural materials and meticulous detailing. The proposed design addressed the existing house, maintained clean lines, and ensured that no unsightly services were visible externally or internally.

The ground floor extension incorporates a stepped brick detail that adds interest to the elevation as well as creating a shallow canopy providing shelter when the large bi-folding doors are opened. Internally the stepped brick detail aligns with a bench and the kitchen cabinets to guide the eye from the kitchen out into the garden.
