Sun Room
Located to the rear of an Arts and Crafts house the extension is designed to address a number of issues, making better use of the living room, connecting it with the garden, improve circulation and create a more defined external area.
The new extension wraps itself around the building reacting to the existing geometry. The spaces are divided into two succinct areas; the internal space, with the external space directly adjacent. The external space is defined by a space frame with a retractable awning to provide summer shading. The facade design echo’s the delicacy of a Victorian lean-to glasshouse with the defined glass paneling effect created by crittall windows often featured on Arts & Crafts buildings of this kind.
The roof geometry echoes the existing hipped roof, by introducing a chamfered roof the proposed massing is reduced. By extending the delicate timber structure above the eaves of the roof the proposal is given order. The impact of the chamfered roof is reduced, also each line within the fenestration relates to an existing line on the house. This strategy then creates a considered and responsive addition that unifies the rear elevation.
